Yuricon was established in 2001 for fans of Japanese Yuri manga and anime. Orignally an online community, Yuricon has expanded to over 1000 members and sponsors a variety of events, including parties, educational lectures and contests. In June 2003, Yuricon held the first 3-day Yuri convention in the Gateway Hilton Hotel (New Jersey). Since then, Yuricon members have been involved in activities ranging from lectures on Yuri culture at MIT, to presentations of movies such as “Utena” at Gay and Lesbian Film Festivals in San Francisco, Tampa, London and New York. In 2003 Yuricon's publishing arm, ALC, began publication of “Yuri Monogatari” (“Yuri Tales,”) the first English-language Yuri manga anthology .This spring, more than 30 members are coming to Japan to enjoy Yuri culture and meet other fans in Tokyo . Anyone interested in this subculture of Japan that is expanding in popularity overseas, is warmly welcome!

What is “Yuri” ? In 1971, lesbians in Japan were termed “the lily tribe” by the editor of Barazoku, a gay men's magazine-Bara is Japanese for “rose” and Yuri is Japanese for the lily. Hence, gay men were Barazoku, or “rose tribe” while lesbians were yurizoku, the lily tribe.
After that, the term "Yurizoku" became associated with pornography aimed at a male audience, but in the years since the meaning has expanded, coming to be used as an expression from sweet crushes of teenage school girls to lesbians. We at Yuricon consider "Yuri" to mean all types of stories about love between women (including admiration, deep friendship, sexual descriptions, lesbian relationships, etc.) and enjoy Manga and Anime depicting these Yuri themes.

There will be many people wantig to enter, so we are very sorry if there is no space and you are unable to enter.
The un-cool, annoying, and stinky might not be allowed entrance.
The American Yuricon is managed by Erica Friedman, but this event, "Yuricon '05 in Tokyo" is being managed by Japanese staff member Rika Takashima. Please be aware that the guests, contents, ways of bringing in attendees, etc. have been strongly influenced by Ms. Takashima's ideas.
